Linux Foundation launches Acumos platform for quick AI deployment

LF Deep Learning Foundation today announced the first publicly available release of Acumos AI, an open source framework and platform for the training and deployment of AI models.

Created in March, the LF Deep Learning Foundation is part of the Linux Foundation project and supports open source projects for machine learning, deep learning, and AI.

Founding members include Tencent, Baidu, Huawei, ZTE, AT&T, and Nokia.


Acumos AI, whose release version is codenamed Athena, also began in March and includes the participation of about 75 developers, a foundation spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email. An updated version is due out in mid-2020, according to a statement provided to VentureBeat.

The first Acumos AI public release can deliver one-click deployment of AI models with Docker or Kubernetes containers, data translation tools, and a graphical user interface for linking multiple AI models together.

Acumos works with AI models created with tools like TensorFlow and scikit-learn, as well as H20.ai.

Other active LF Deep Learning Foundation projects include machine learning platform Angel and Elastic Deep Learning, a project to help cloud service providers make cloud cluster services with frameworks like TensorFlow and PaddlePaddle.

The two projects were added in August by Tencent and Baidu, respectively, a foundation spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email.

The Acumos AI community will also be able to utilize the AI Marketplace for sharing and downloading models. To seed the marketplace, a $100,000 competition was held earlier this year, with top winners making models that do things like predict the price of a home or determine the malignancy of a strain of breast cancer.

Acumos is the latest tool for quick AI deployment to make its debut in recent weeks. There’s also Horizon, a reinforcement learning platform created by Facebook engineers and researchers, as well as Kubeflow Pipelines from Google Cloud Platform, which also relies on containers for deploying AI.

The founding organizations of Acumos Project are AT&T and Tech Mahindra. In the upcoming weeks, more companies are expected to become a part of the project when it establishes its governance model. The project is expected to be launched in early 2020.

Acumos Project aims to make artificial intelligence available to everyone with the help of a common framework/platform for free exchange of machine learning tools.

Unlike TensorFlow framework, which is used to create machine learning models, Acumos will be a directory for searching/sharing AI models as well as a system for working on those models.

The Linux Foundation also aims to create an industry standard for making AI applications easily accessible to any developer. This will be done by making Acumos platform user-centric.

Acumos: Linux Foundation makes it easier to deploy AI apps

The Linux Foundation has introduced an open source project called Acumos which aims to make it easier to build, share, and deploy AI applications.

By providing a common framework, Acumos intends to make artificial intelligence development more accessible. Acumos differs from TensorFlow, an existing popular framework, in that it will be offer a directory for sharing AI models in addition to working on them.

“An open and connected AI platform will promote collaboration as developers and companies look to define the future of AI,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director at The Linux Foundation.

“Because the platform is open source, it will be accessible to anyone with an interest in AI and machine learning, and customisable to meet specific needs. We expect interest from organisations doing work with autonomous vehicles, drones, content curation and analytics, and much more.”

The founding members of Acumos are AT&T and Tech Mahindra; both of whom are contributing the initial code. The Linux Foundation will host the platform and its AI marketplace in the hope its large developer community will help to nurture an active, large ecosystem around the project.

“In The Linux Foundation, we have an able partner to increase the adoption of Acumos across the community to help enrich the platform,” comments Raman Abrol, SVP & Business Unit Head of Americas, Comms, Media & Entertainment at Tech Mahindra. “This platform jointly developed with AT&T is a testimony to our continued commitment to the open source community.”

The ultimate goal for the project is to create an industry standard which makes AI development easier and builds a community around reusable code. Whereas most existing tools are complex and designed for data scientists, Acumos will be user-centric.

“The current state of today’s AI environment is fractured, which creates a significant barrier to adoption,” said Mazin Gilbert, Vice President of Advanced Technology at AT&T Labs. “Acumos will expedite innovation and deployment of AI applications, and make them available to everyone.”


Acumos will launch early 2020 and is expected to gain further members in the coming weeks prior to release.

American telecommunications mainstay AT&T is working with Indian multinational IT and networking technology firm Tech Mahindra to build an open source Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform named Acumos.

Hosted by The Linux Foundation, the platform is hoped to provide a marketplace for accessing, using and enhancing those applications.

The firm says the industry needs a way to make those apps reusable and accessible to those beyond the company that created them and simplify deployments to lower the barrier to entry.

The Acumos platform is an extensible framework for machine learning solutions — it provides the capability to edit, integrate, compose, package, train and deploy AI microservices.

Simply put, it’s an AI marketplace where applications can be chained to create complex and sophisticated AI services.

According to AT&T, “Take someone who wants to create an AI application for video analytics. The Acumos platform gives them a variety of applications to choose from, like location tracking and facial recognition. The platform interface lets you choose AI capabilities and stitch them together automatically so they function as a single application. In this case, the new service could identify where the video was shot based on background landmarks, and identify the speakers in it – design and deploy in a single interface and with minimal additional code development.”

Content curation, autonomous cars, drones, and augmented reality/virtual reality are other areas where AI models could be used with the Acumos platform.

“Our goal with open sourcing the Acumos platform is to make building and deploying AI applications as easy as creating a website,” said Mazin Gilbert, vice president of advanced technology at AT& T Labs . “We’re collaborating with Tech Mahindra to establish an industry standard for AI in the networking space. We invite others to join us to create a global harmonization in AI and set the stage for all future AI network applications and services.”

The Acumos platform is built on open source technologies and can federate across the various AI tools available today, enabling easy access for developers and businesses.

Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin explains that the organisation has previously used this collaborative model to launch ONAP, the operating system for virtualised networks.


The involved players here are getting the initial framework into open source as quickly as possible so the developer community can accelerate the development of the platform.

AT&T announces Acumos, an open-source platform for sharing and reusing AI apps

Wireless carrier AT&T Inc. is joining with the Indian information technology services provider Tech Mahindra Ltd. to create an open-source artificial intelligence platform for developers to build, share and deploy AI applications.

The Acumos Project, announced Monday, will be hosted by the Linux Foundation, which said the platform will also provide a marketplace for accessing, using and enhancing AI apps.

AI has emerged as one of the most exciting new technologies in today’s data-driven market, but AT&T said building AI applications remains fraught with complexity and extremely expensive. To remedy those problems, what’s needed is a way to make AI apps reusable and accessible beyond the company that built them. There’s also a need to simplify deployment to lower the barrier to entry, AT&T said.

That’s what Acumos sets out to do. It’s described as an extensible framework for machine learning solutions that gives developers with the ability to edit, compose, integrate, package, train and deploy AI-based microservices. Essentially, it’s a new AI marketplace for applications that can be used to create a wide range of AI services.

“Our goal with open sourcing the Acumos platform is to make building and deploying AI applications as easy as creating a website,” Mazin Gilbert, vice president of advanced technology at AT&T Labs, said in a statement. “We’re collaborating with Tech Mahindra to establish an industry standard for AI in the networking space.”

For example, if developers want to create an AI-based app for analytics, they can choose from a variety of applications hosted by Acumos, including location tracking and facial recognition apps. Using the platform, developers simply select the AI capabilities they need and forge them together so they can function as a single app.


AT&T said that with minimal coding, such a new service could be able to identify the location of where a video was shot based on landmarks in the background and identify the people speaking in it. Acumos will support other AI models too, including those designed for augmented and virtual reality, autonomous cars, content creation and drones.

Acumos will also leverage AT&T’s Indigo platform, which is a software-defined, data-powered network for delivering faster Internet speeds, the company said.

Although some might be surprised to see AT&T taking a lead in AI, the wireless operator is no stranger to the world of open-source. Earlier this year it donated its ECOMP virtualized networking platform to the Linux Foundation, saying it will release all 8.5 million lines of code in the coming months. AT&T’s goal is to make ECOMP, which it has developed internally over several years, the telecom industry’s standard platform for automating and managing virtual network functions and other networking capabilities.

With the Acumos Project, AT&T said, it’s also going to enhance its approach to releasing internal projects to the open-source community. “We’re getting the initial framework into open source as quickly as possible,” AT&T said in a statement. “That way, the developer community can accelerate the development of the platform.”

Linux Foundation Launches Open AI Effort

The Linux Foundation launched a deep learning initiative this week designed to create a “neutral space for harmonization and acceleration” of AI, machine learning and deep learning technologies. The initial focus will be an AI standardization effort.

The open source project called LF Deep Learning Foundation seeks to make the emerging AI technologies widely available to data scientists and developers, the group said during this week’s Open Networking Summit in Los Angeles.

Founding members include several Chinese technology giants that are pouring huge sums into AI research as part of a national strategy to dominate AI. They are: China’s search giant Baidu; networking giant Huawei (SHE: 002502); Tencent, often referred to as China’s Facebook; and telecommunications equipment vendor ZTE (SHE: 000063).

Other members include Amdocs, AT&T (NYSE: T), networking startup B.Yond, Indian IT services specialist Tech Mahindra (NSE: TECHM)

and workload management specialist Univa Corp.

Organizers said the group’s initial focus will be the Acumos AI Project also launched this week that aims to build an open source framework for AI model development and sharing. The “umbrella” organization also will support individual AI, machine learning and deep learning projects.

AI leader Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU), which has staked its future on advancing AI research, and Tencent (HKG: 0700) each said they intend to contribute projects to Linux initiative. “LF Deep Learning enables the open source community to support entire ecosystems of projects in these spaces,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation.

Acumos AI, the initial project supported by the deep learning group, aims to standardize the AI infrastructure stack and components to encourage the sharing of AI models and workflows. The goal is to allow data scientists and model trainers to focus on innovating by providing a turnkey AI development platform.

The Linux Foundation noted that many AI tools are difficult to implement and require significant domain expertise. Acumos would provide “a visual workflow to design AI and [machine learning] applications, as well as a marketplace for freely sharing AI solutions and data models,” it said.

AT&T and Tech Mahindra contributed the initial Acumos code.

Amdocs (NASDAQ: DOX), Chesterfield, Mo., a software and services vendor to media companies, said it would provide data tools and models to the deep learning initiative.

The open AI effort begins as China and other countries have released ambitious AI development strategies over the last year aimed at dominating the field. Those blueprints have prompted calls from U.S. groups to develop a national strategy designed to preserve the current U.S. lead in AI research.

As global competition heats up, the Linux Foundation initiative represents one of the first attempts at standardizing AI development tools while applying the open-source development model to an otherwise heated technological rivalry.
